A group of 35 lawmakers, known as the Reformers, has proposed major amendments to the 1999 Constitution, including the introduction of a six-year single term for the President and governors.
The lawmakers are also proposing a constitutional amendment to create two vice presidents from the southern and northern parts of Nigeria.
Another significant proposal from the group is the rotation of the Presidency among the six geopolitical zones and holding all elections on the same day.
Briefing journalists on Monday at the National Assembly, the lawmakers, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, said they have produced 50 proposed amendments, with six bills already listed on the House floor.
“Constitutional Amendment to provide that the President and the 1st Vice President shall come from the same part of the country (north or south) and the 1st Vice President shall become President whenever the President becomes incapacitated, i.e., V.P. (Succession), V.P. (Administration and Economy),” Ugochinyere stated.
He emphasized that the country’s Constitution has significant gaps that need to be addressed.
