An attempt by a splinter group within the National Association of Yewa Students (NAYES) to hold an unauthorized convention in Ebute Igbooro-Yewa on Friday, December 27, 2024, has drawn the attention of concerned elders in Yewaland.
Under the leadership of the Yewa People Development Council (YPDC), the elders convened a consultative meeting in Ilaro and subsequently petitioned the Ogun State Police Command and the Directorate of State Security (DSS) to prevent the gathering, which they described as a potential threat to peace in the region.
The YPDC, with the support of the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, emphasized that the planned convention is unauthorized. The Council noted that NAYES had recently conducted a legitimate convention on November 30, 2024, at the Community High School, Ilara-Yewa, where Comrade Tella Faruq Abayomi was elected as the new president to lead the association for the 2024/2025 term.
In a press statement signed by its Secretary-General, Pastor Bamidele Obafemi Akinola, the YPDC reaffirmed its role in overseeing NAYES as part of its youth leadership development program. The statement noted that the recently inaugurated NAYES executive council is the only recognized body representing Yewa students.
“The Yewa People Development Council wishes to inform the public that NAYES is an affiliate organization under YPDC’s Youth Leadership Nurturing Programme. The association recently held its legitimate convention and inaugurated its new executive council under the supervision of the Paramount Ruler of Yewaland at the YPDC Secretariat in Ilaro,” the statement read.
YPDC also raised concerns about reports of a parallel convention planned by an unauthorized faction, warning of the potential for chaos and security breaches. “We urge His Royal Majesty, Alayeluwa Oba M.A. Dosunmu, the Elebute of Ebute Igbooro-Yewa, and all relevant authorities to take swift action to prevent this unauthorized gathering. Such a convention risks undermining the unity and security of the Yewa student community,” the statement added.
Prominent figures at the consultative meeting included the Chairman of The Governing Council, Prof. Rahaman Adisa Bello, and the Chairman of the Yewaland Security Assessment Committee (YESAC), Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (rtd). The YPDC’s intervention reflects its commitment to maintaining order and unity within Yewaland while safeguarding the interests of its youth.
